Saturday May 17 is the World Day of Recycling, so what an appropriate time for volunteers in Arona to start this summers programme of beach cleaning. Arona council have chosen Palm Mar as the venue for the first of 2 days of efforts to remove rubbish from the beachfronts firstly in Palm Mar and on Sunday June 1, World Ocean Environment Day in Las Galletas and Los Cristianos.
In Palm Mar, the volunteers will meet at 10am at Playa Arenita and comb their way along the beach area armed with bin bags and lots of enthusiasm. The day will also include the release of 2 turtles into the ocean after treatment at the Fundacion Neotropico at noon, an arts workshop at 1pm and a picnic at 2pm. The day will involve lots of local youngsters and be as much about raising awareness as removing rubbish.
Moving on to June 1, and the clean up army will be marching on 2 fronts. Again with a 10am start, teams will gather at Playa Los Enojados in Las Galletas and the port car park in Los Cristianos, ready to tackle the 2 beaches there. This is the third year of these events, and it will help to focus attention on Aguaviva, the festival of the oceans, which runs through most of June.
